When I first heard about a “möbius strip” from writer Parker Palmer, I thought it was a name for a German freeway or something.
The Smithsonian magazine explains that
“a Möbius strip can be created by taking a strip of paper, giving it an odd number of half-twists, then taping the ends back together to form a loop. If you take a pencil and draw a line along the center of the strip, you’ll see that the line apparently runs along both sides of the loop.”
Watch this video below as I’d show you the implications of moving along on a möbius strip:
A therapist needs to travel on the möbius strip, weaving between “performing” and “learning”. If we start on performing, we end up in learning on the möbius strip. And if we move learning, it must end up in performing.
And over-emphasis on performing can impede learning. On the other hand, and focusing solely on learning without translate into the performance side of therapy, is of little clinical value.
(For more on this distinction between performing and learning, LISTEN TO THIS PODCAST EPISODE: #5 When Performing Impedes Learning. Or if you want to watch the video version, click here.)
We need to move along this möbius strip. Plus, moving on this Escher-like contraption affords a new relationship with mistakes (more on this in the video).
This is what is calls for in the cycle of our development. We need to build a Learning System.
Embedded in a Learning System is a framework that serves to hold the pieces together. In the next video, I highlight the 4 pillars of a deliberate practice framework that has direct implications of your work. We wrote an entire book on this, called Better Results that just came out. In this module 3 of Deep Learner, with more than 8 practical tips, we go into the weeds of how to Create a Learning System. (Plus, in this “möbius strip” segment, you’d see another video below

Why all this talk about learning?
Because if we are to truly reap the rewards of our professional development efforts, we need to fully consider how we can enhance the impact of what and how we learn deeply, so that it translate into better results. That way, our deliberate practice efforts begins to pay-off!
