At that time, I wrote to many authors, and it was uncommon that anyone replied.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was in the US, and I was in Singapore and Australia, so most of our conversations were his early mornings\/my late night discussions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of hours I&#8217;ve clocked on Skype with Scott would make my wife very upset.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"embedly-card\" data-card-controls=\"1\" data-card-align=\"center\" data-card-theme=\"light\"><h4><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/2wUQCwpNaMI?si=FrATLTtzlDU906yp\">10. The Wisdom Pattern of Scott Miller<\/a><\/h4><p>In this exclusive episode #10 on Frontiers Radio, we have a special guest, Dr. Scott Miller. We talked about several luminary figures who shaped and influenced his life, pivotal turning points, the writing process and his thoughts around the future of psychotherapy.<\/p><\/blockquote><script async src=\"\/\/cdn.embedly.com\/widgets\/platform.js\" charset=\"UTF-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Three years later, in 2010, I was offered a chance to do my doctorate<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So my wife and packed our bags and moved to Australia. It was nerving. We both left our full-time jobs and families, and settled for student allowances for the next three years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This cumulated to the publication of the first empirical study on deliberate practice in psychotherapy in 2014.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can read the study&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/9686106\/The_role_of_deliberate_practice_in_the_development_of_highly_effective_psychotherapists_Chow_Miller_Seidel_Kane_Thornton_Andrews_2015_\">\u200bhere\u200b<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to dive into the weeds, you can read the full dissertation&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/9355521\/The_Study_of_Supershrinks_Development_and_Deliberate_Practices_of_Highly_Effective_Psychotherapists_PhD_Dissertation_\">\u200bhere\u200b<\/a>. To me, what we didn&#8217;t find is more interesting than what we found.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deliberate Practice Defined<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Deliberate Practice is often confused with clinical practice and&nbsp;<em>purposeful&nbsp;<\/em>practice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clinical practice is the output of you do.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First,&nbsp;<strong>Clinical practice is not deliberate practice<\/strong>. Several studies show that clinical experience does not lead to improvement.[1]&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.filekitcdn.com\/e\/m4ApxUuh6u76wgADqpiUv3\/doVsZSNFrvMbUmZMLr5Yrn\/email\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Experience, Confidence, and Competence are not the same. See this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/6-visuals\/\">\u200bpost\u200b<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Second, purposeful practice is how we were taught in school.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.filekitcdn.com\/e\/m4ApxUuh6u76wgADqpiUv3\/p9EuqBmZghZoWoLzQpU8MY\/email\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:662px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Purposeful Practice<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In purposeful practice, we are often led by a teacher, guided by a pre-determined curriculum objective. To determine whether &#8220;learning&#8221; takes place, evaluative or performance tests are conducted. Finally, repetition is key, so &#8220;practice makes perfect.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In purposeful practice, the learning process is top-down.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now let&#8217;s contrast this with deliberate practice.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.filekitcdn.com\/e\/m4ApxUuh6u76wgADqpiUv3\/4nqywN374svkoTzjGuj1sk\/email\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:687px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Deliberate Practice<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In DP, you are often coached by someone who knows your work, so that&nbsp;<em>individualised<\/em>&nbsp;learning objectives is designed, coupled with&nbsp;<em>learning&nbsp;<\/em>feedback (not just performing feedback) to continuously calibrate the direction of your learning efforts. Finally, &#8220;practice does not make perfect.&#8221; Practice makes permanent. This is why it is not just mere repetition, but successive refinement.[2]&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In DP, the learning process if often bottom-up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The late K Anders Ericsson was the father of deliberate practice. Much was studied in the outcome of DP on performance.
