{"id":4582,"date":"2022-10-06T15:56:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-06T07:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/?p=4582"},"modified":"2023-04-17T11:01:49","modified_gmt":"2023-04-17T03:01:49","slug":"thinkinginthirdspart2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/thinkinginthirdspart2\/","title":{"rendered":"Thinking in Thirds: Going Deeper (Part II of III)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In Part I of&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/thinkinginthirdspart1\/\">Thinking in Thirds<\/a><\/strong>, I talked about the rule of three in various domains like the performing arts, storytelling and music, and how segmenting the therapy hour into thirds can be structurally (not rigidly) helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a recap, here are the three different stages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>An Invitational Beginning,<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Deepening the Process, &amp;<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Resolution.<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>And here are the three possible hats we might end up wearing at the beginning of&nbsp;<strong>Stage 1<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The Meanderer<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>The Rigid Behaviourist<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>The Focused<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Feel free to return to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/darylchow.substack.com\/p\/thinkinginthirdspart1\">Part I<\/a>&nbsp;for more details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stage 2: Deepening the Process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the mid-point of the therapy hour, I call the second stage of the therapy hour the&nbsp;<strong>Deepening phase<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roughly speaking, we are going further than what was superficially presented at the beginning phase. We are not the experts of the individual&#8217;s lives, but we can be an &#8220;emotional tour guide&#8221; by facilitating the process by going deeper towards the unspokens (for more on this, check out this article:&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/listeningintospeech\/\">Listening Into Speech: Will Say, Won&#8217;t Say, Can&#8217;t Say<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the healing endeavour, the framing of the conversation gets intentionally narrower and more focused.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fbucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdc941151-525d-4f76-b2c2-f1112f4ab1cc_419x287.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fbucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdc941151-525d-4f76-b2c2-f1112f4ab1cc_419x287.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In turn, there is a trade-off. Other less relevant topics are not addressed. Recall: This happens&nbsp;<em>by design<\/em>. The aim is not to cover all of the contents of a person&#8217;s lives, but to help them process emotional wounds, hurts, and rebuild their lives in a meaningful way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the book,&nbsp;<em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/darylchow.com\/product\/firstkiss\/\">The First Kiss: Undoing the Intake Model<\/a>\u2026<\/strong><\/em>, I talked about why we must resist the urge to be Sherlock Holmes. We must be careful not to engage in &#8220;<strong>TBU&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp;i.e.,&nbsp;<strong>True But Useless information.&nbsp;<\/strong>I asked,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>&#8220;Have we earned the license to pry?&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>When we engage in TBU, especially at the early stages, we run the risk of<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Re-traumatisation<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Will Not Mobilised<\/strong>: If their will is not on board, we might face a misalignment in alliance. We might even try to &#8220;Ra Ra&#8221; them into action, categorise them as at the &#8220;pre-contemplative&#8221; stage of change. Eventually, we are left breathless working harder than your client.<\/li><li><strong>Lack of an effective focus<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(Note: This chapter on TBU is available on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/avoid-true-but-useless-information\/\">Frontiers<\/a>).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ACT II: Deepening the Process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is worth exploring the 3 different hats we might end up wearing in ACT II: Deepening the Process.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The Wanderer<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>The Wanderer is someone who is aimless.&nbsp;<br><br>A wandering therapist listens intently, nods and agrees, but has no idea where this is heading.&nbsp;<br><br>Make no mistake this is not a rare occurrence for most therapists worth their salt. However, for therapy to be effective, the proportion of wanderings shouldn&#8217;t supersede a shared directionality.<br>The result of over-wandering is what psychoanalyst Daniel calls &#8220;forms of lifelessness,&#8221; i.e., the therapeutic process goes nowhere promising and flatlines.&nbsp;<br><\/li><li><strong>The Overwhelmed<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>A related hat we might end up wearing is that of being overwhelmed.&nbsp;<br><br>This is especially so when we hear client&#8217;s stories which are profoundly impacted by a history of multiple adversities and complex traumas.&nbsp;<br><br>In addition, when a client who is highly eager to tell their story, we are left feeling as if the floodgates are opened and have no way to contain the outpouring.<br>In some sense, when we find that we are overwhelmed at this rough mid-point of therapy, it might be possible that we are still stuck in Act I: The Beginning stage.&nbsp;<br><br>This can happen even if it is not the first session.<br>The key is to learn to hold your bearings and navigate even when the waters are choppy. We have to find a way to synthesise all the flying pieces and connect the dots, so as to find a North from here.&nbsp;<br><br><\/li><li><strong>The Deep-Sea Diver<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>When we have established a sense of focus in Act I, we can now take the process one step deeper.&nbsp;<br><br>The Deep-Sea Diver is one who not only knows how to swim in the sea of emotions, but also goes further than an average friendly conversation at the pub.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Diver-without-Fish-copy-901x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4585\" width=\"319\" height=\"364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Diver-without-Fish-copy-901x1024.png 901w, https:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Diver-without-Fish-copy-264x300.png 264w, https:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Diver-without-Fish-copy-520x591.png 520w, https:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Diver-without-Fish-copy-600x682.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 319px) 100vw, 319px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In this process of going deeper, consensus must be on-board.&nbsp;<br><br>Without goal-consensus, we run the risk of rupturing the alliance. This requires the client&#8217;s will to be aligned with not just the&nbsp;<strong>outcome-goal<\/strong>&nbsp;(i.e., What result they want to have from coming to therapy), but also the&nbsp;<strong>process-goal<\/strong>&nbsp;(i.e., How the therapist and client are going to employ certain approaches to get there.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim of this &#8220;deep sea exploration&#8221; is to create a form of vitality.
