{"id":4569,"date":"2022-09-30T12:07:25","date_gmt":"2022-09-30T04:07:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/?p=4569"},"modified":"2022-09-30T12:07:27","modified_gmt":"2022-09-30T04:07:27","slug":"feedbackguise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/feedbackguise\/","title":{"rendered":"The Guise of Feedback"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Not all feedback is created equal.&nbsp;<br><br>Who specifically do you trust to give you feedback about your development?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to distinguish between&nbsp;<strong>performance feedback<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>learning feedback<\/strong>.&nbsp;<br><br>Feedback from clients are&nbsp;<strong>performance feedback<\/strong>, used to specifically tune and calibrate to individual&#8217;s needs, one client at a time.&nbsp;<br><br>Feedback from a mentor\/coach\/supervisor are&nbsp;<strong>learning feedback<\/strong>, used to specifically help you with at your growth edge, one therapist at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, listen to to a crowd\u2019s response if you are performing on stage. Their real-time responses give you a sense if you message, music or joke has landed. They can tell you&nbsp;<strong><em>what<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;worked or didn\u2019t, but they can\u2019t tell you&nbsp;<strong><em>how<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;to improve. Everyone will have a different opinion. They might even be able to tell you what&#8217;s wrong, but not how to fix what&#8217;s wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once again, not all feedback is created equal, even in terms of learning feedback. Be warned: What is guised as \u201cfeedback\u201d is actually a performance \u201cevaluation\u201d.<br><br>Besides, an over-emphasis on performance can\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/performinglearning\/\">impede real learning<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order for learning feedback to be useful, it has to be specific, targeted and contextually relevant. Theoretical discussions and affirmations aren&#8217;t learning feedback.
