(opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalnavigator.com\/tristan-gooley\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tristan Gooley.<\/a>[1] Maybe you are much more savvy in the woods than I am, but for me, I was fascinated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turns out that there are clues to navigating in nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s some examples: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Did you know <\/strong>that the heart of a tree stump is often not at the centre? It is often off-centre towards the sun.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"embedly-card\" data-card-controls=\"1\" data-card-align=\"center\" data-card-theme=\"light\"><h4><a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=A505va1gYAk&#038;feature=share\">Tristan Gooley Natural Navigator Natural Navigation<\/a><\/h4><p>Tristan Gooley, author of The Natural Navigator book, takes on a short natural navigation challenge in the South Downs. Includes tips on navigating using lichens, grasses, trees, birds and the sun.<\/p><\/blockquote><script async src=\"\/\/cdn.embedly.com\/widgets\/platform.js\" charset=\"UTF-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>2. <strong>Did you know<\/strong> about the &#8220;tick effect&#8221; on trees? One side of the tree grows upwards, and branches on the other side grows sidewards. In the northern hemisphere, the branches are often pointing towards the southern sky i.e., sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n <blockquote class=\"embedly-card\" data-card-controls=\"1\" data-card-align=\"center\" data-card-theme=\"light\"><h4><a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=wXhvOpTfXgE&#038;feature=share\">Using Trees as a Compass &#8211; The Tick Effect<\/a><\/h4><p>How to Find North or South Using Trees &#8211; Natural Navigation<\/p><\/blockquote><script async src=\"\/\/cdn.embedly.com\/widgets\/platform.js\" charset=\"UTF-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>3. <strong>Did you know<\/strong> that birds can tell you about the weather? Birds typically face the wind so as to not raffle their feathers.  If they suddenly change direction in the day, there&#8217;s a chance of a storm. (Listen to Gooley&#8217;s interview <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"here (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/aom.is\/weather\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nature of Navigation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though I&#8217;ve lived in Western Australia for more than 11 years, my knowledge pales in comparison to a 12 year-old-boy that I used to do outreach work with. He knew where the skatepark was, where the mall was, and even when we were hiking in the trails, he knew the way! &#8220;Turn left here, Daryl.&#8221; He was my navigator. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless it is the route from home to my practice&#8211;which is a straight road&#8211;I find myself overly-reliant on google maps. (For more trivialities on me getting losing my bearings in the army, see this <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"blogpost (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/which-way-to-go\/\" target=\"_blank\">blogpost<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The thing is, unless you stay in bed, we are all navigators. Since discovering Tristan Gooley&#8217;s work, I&#8217;m now playing a game with myself to see if I got my bearings of where&#8217;s north (Check the compass post-hoc). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a consequence of this ongoing experiments with navigation, I found myself slightly more aware of my surroundings. I&#8217;m noticing a little bit more. Strangely, a little bit more &#8220;grounded&#8221; even. (A few days ago, my wife asked if I needed Google maps while I was driving. I said no thank you. My wife gave me a suspicious look). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More fundamentally, I can see myself slowly changing my beliefs that &#8220;I&#8217;m no good with direction.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Meanderings to Directionality<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What has this got to do with professional development? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest challenges that practitioners face is not knowing what to work on that would have an impact on actually improving their work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Dont-know-what-to-work-on-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4208\" width=\"485\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Dont-know-what-to-work-on-1.jpeg 646w, https:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Dont-know-what-to-work-on-1-300x195.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Dont-know-what-to-work-on-1-520x338.jpeg 520w, https:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Dont-know-what-to-work-on-1-600x390.jpeg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Collective responses from practitioners at the start of deliberate practice trainings<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of us pick trainings, workshops and clinical supervisors that appeal to our beliefs. This makes perfect sense. After all, why adopt an approach that isn&#8217;t cogent to your worldview? Besides, the body of evidence is clear that the contribution of &#8220;who&#8221; the therapist is (5-9%) matters more than the actual &#8220;what&#8221; treatment modality that is utilised (1%). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, figuring out<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" where you actually are (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/figure-out-where-you-are\/\" target=\"_blank\"> where you actually are<\/a> in order to figure out your growth edge, or what Leo Vygotsky calls &#8220;the zone of proximal development&#8221;[2] is such a crucial professional development navigation skill. This requires depth-field perception of not just working on the &#8220;stuck&#8221; cases that you are facing, but also figuring out how you are performing at a wholistic level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key is not to go someone else&#8217;s way, you need figure out and &#8220;go your own way.&#8221; (Hum the chorus of Fleetwood Mac&#8217;s tune). There is no map for this, but they is a way. There is no &#8220;formula,&#8221; but there is a shape and form when we can recognise the patterns from our clinical intuition paired with actual clinical data.
