{"id":3476,"date":"2020-01-16T15:46:23","date_gmt":"2020-01-16T07:46:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/?p=3476"},"modified":"2020-01-16T15:53:23","modified_gmt":"2020-01-16T07:53:23","slug":"teachingandlearning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/teachingandlearning\/","title":{"rendered":"You Haven&#8217;t Taught Until They Have Learned"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I love this phrase from the Hall of Fame basketball coach John Wooden. &#8220;You haven&#8217;t taught until they&#8217;ve learned.&#8221;[1] It&#8217;s tempting to focus on what we teach as clinical supervisors. Instead, we need to focus on what therapists are&nbsp;<em>learning<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do this, supervisors have to hold the paradox of two worlds, that of&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>performance<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>development<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>An over-emphasis on performance can impede deep learning and negate performance, and an over-focused on the &#8220;self of the therapist&#8221; without an eye on performance i.e, client outcome can be turn into a navel-gazing exercise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, <strong>supervisors have to create safe spaces for growth, not competence.<\/strong> <br><br>Further, given that supervisors are two steps removed from the clinical work, supervisors need to keep an eye that their combined efforts should translate into client improvement. <br><br>Researcher Edward Watkins raises an important question, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>  <em> <strong>If we cannot show that supervision affects patient outcome, then how can we continue to justify supervision?<\/strong><\/em>[2]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s more from Coach Wooden:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On <strong>mastering the craft<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>&#8230;You win by becoming a better player of the game at large, not by adapting your technique to every new team you face. Your opponent will always be changing; it&#8217;s a losing race. But if you master the game, you will have skills and knowledge you need to defeat whoever you face.<\/em>[3]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>On <strong>Dignity<\/strong> (taught by his father, Joshua Wooden):&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>No one is better than you and you are not better than anyone else.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>On <strong>Directionality<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>If you don\u2019t have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps supervisors can embrace Coach Wooden&#8217;s maxim by rephrasing it to &#8220;You haven&#8217;t taught until&nbsp;<em><strong>you<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;have learned.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-very-light-gray-background-color\"><em>p\/s: Today is the last day (17th of Jan 2020) to LEARN DEEPLY in the<strong> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Reigniting Clinical Supervision (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/darylchowcourses.teachable.com\/p\/reignitingsupervision8\/\" target=\"_blank\">Reigniting Clinical Supervision<\/a><\/strong> (RCS) web-based workshop.
