Using an Outcome Measure (<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/scott-d-miller-ph-d.myshopify.com\/collections\/performance-metrics\/products\/performance-metrics-licenses-for-the-ors-and-srs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Outcome Rating Scale, ORS<\/a>; Clinical Outcome Routine Evaluation, CORE),<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #000000; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">1. <strong style=\"color: #000000;\">Rate<\/strong>: After the first session, ask your client to RATE the outcome measure in subsequent sessions;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #000000; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">2. <strong style=\"color: #000000;\">Predict<\/strong>: Before you see your client\u2019s score, PREDICT what they would score. It is important that you write down scores for each of the sub-scales, if any. (for ORS, Individual wellbeing, close relationships, Social, General). This prevents us from falling into the \u201cI knew it all along\u201d hindsight bias effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #000000; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">3. <strong style=\"color: #000000;\">Evaluate<\/strong>: Compare and contrast the scores. See what stands out. Talk about the with your client.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">B. Using an&nbsp;alliance measure (e.g., <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/scott-d-miller-ph-d.myshopify.com\/collections\/performance-metrics\/products\/performance-metrics-licenses-for-the-ors-and-srs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Session Rating Scale, SRS<\/a>),<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #000000; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">1. <strong style=\"color: #000000;\">Rate<\/strong>: At the end of the first session, ask your client to RATE how they feel about the level of engagement in the session;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #000000; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">2. <strong style=\"color: #000000;\">Predict<\/strong>: Before you see your client\u2019s score, PREDICT what they would score. It is important that you write down scores for each of the sub-scales (for SRS, level of emotional connection, goals, approach\/method, overall).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #000000; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">3. <strong style=\"color: #000000;\">Evaluate<\/strong>: Compare and contrast the scores. See what surprised you. Form your feedback questions from there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">What&#8217;s interesting from <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/9355521\/The_Study_of_Supershrinks_Development_and_Deliberate_Practices_of_Highly_Effective_Psychotherapists_PhD_Dissertation_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">our study of highly effective therapists, &nbsp;the top performers are more likely to report being surprised by client\u2019s feedback that their counterparts<\/span><\/strong><\/a>. It does seem to suggest that the highly effective therapists are more willing to be corrected. They have a sense of openness to receive and consider client\u2019s viewpoints, even if it may be contradictory to the therapist existing expectations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.columbia.edu\/cu\/psychology\/metcalfe\/People.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Janet Metcalfe<\/span><\/a> and colleagues suggests that individuals are more likely to correct errors made with initial high confidence than those made with low-confidence, so long as the corrective feedback is given (Barbie &amp; Metcalfe, 2012; Butterfield &amp; Metcalfe, 2001; Butterfield &amp; Metcalfe, 2006; Metcalfe &amp; Finn, 2011). Although it may seem intuitive that deeply held beliefs are more entrenched and are the hardest to change, experimental studies have indicated that individuals are more likely to overwrite their responses and correct their beliefs (Butterfield &amp; Metcalfe, 2001; Butterfield &amp; Metcalfe, 2006), and are more likely to retain the correct answer compared to knowing the correct answer at the outset (Barbie &amp; Metcalfe, 2012).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 14px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong style=\"color: #000000;\"><em style=\"color: #000000;\">In other words, the Rate &amp; Predict Exercise is set up to intentionally create <\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong style=\"color: #000000;\"><em style=\"color: #000000;\">a context&nbsp;for hypercorrection,&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5; color: #000000;\"><em style=\"color: #000000;\">not hyper-confirmation.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">When we experience hypercorrection, we learn more deeply, as it enhances the memory encoding system. We learn nothing as long as we keep seeking to confirm what we already know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/focusing.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Eugene<\/span> <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Gendlin<\/span><\/strong>,<\/a> pioneer of the<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/focusing.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"> focusing approach in therapy<\/span><\/a>, said in a handful of&nbsp;years ago that when he\u2019s asking questions in therapy,&nbsp; he no longer seeks to be confirmed like he used to in the past. &nbsp;Rather, he\u2019s now intentionally seeking to be disconfirmed by his client.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">Try this out.
