This was largely based on K. Anders Ericsson and colleagues seminal work in 1993, studying the effects of<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"> <a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/graphics8.nytimes.com\/images\/blogs\/freakonomics\/pdf\/DeliberatePractice%28PsychologicalReview%29.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deliberate practice on musical performance<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\">For the record, this 10,000-hour rule is a crude estimate\u2013rather than a rule\u2013based on averages. Clearly, there are folks who take more time, and others, much to our envy, take less time to develop true expertise. (Here&#8217;s what we found about the influence of <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/9686106\/The_role_of_deliberate_practice_in_the_development_of_highly_effective_psychotherapists_Chow_Miller_Seidel_Kane_Thornton_Andrews_2015_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deliberate practice on the development of highly effective psychotherapists<\/a><\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\">But here\u2019s another number that doesn\u2019t get talked <\/span>a lot<span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\"> about: <strong>60 hours.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\">This is the amount of time the top violinists versus the average performers spent each week resting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\">That&#8217;s right. <strong>Rest<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\">On average, the top violinists took<strong> 5.4 hours<\/strong> more in states of shut-eye. (The amount of time difference that top musicians rested was 60hrs\/wk, compared to the average performers of 54.6hrs\/wk.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\">Not only did the top violinists sleep more (8.6hrs vs 7.8hrs), they also took more snoozes in the afternoon. (I call this &#8220;horizontal meditation&#8221;).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\">Why is this important for you as therapists out there in the real world?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\">We underrate the importance of taking\u00a0breaks during our clinical practice. Busyness almost always wins. Must this be a perpetual losing battle with time? (see my other blog site\u00a0Full Circles: Reflections on Living for this article, <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/darylchow.com\/fullcircles\/2017\/06\/19\/moretime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The One Thing You Can Do to Have More Time<\/a>)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\">First, in order to <\/span>optimise<span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\"> learning, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Mindshift-Obstacles-Learning-Discover-Potential-ebook\/dp\/B01J2SU2QM\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1539096983&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=Mindshift\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Barbara Oakley<\/span><\/a> stresses the importance of how we need to weave between a focused state and diffused state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\">Second, in order to <\/span>optimise<span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\"> our ability to engage with our clients on a regular basis, we need to see that stress is not the problem a lack of recovery is. (See these blogposts, <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/2018\/05\/28\/what-burns-you-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What Burns You Out<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333333;\">and<\/span> <a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/darylchow.com\/frontiers\/2018\/05\/18\/the-brink\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Brink<\/a>).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\">Call to &#8220;Non-Action&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\">Whenever I bring this up to clinicians around the world, I would get a nod of approval, but unless they move to Japan, or work for companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleep.org\/articles\/sleeping-work-companies-nap-rooms-snooze-friendly-policies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nike or Zappos<\/a>, they do not see it as possible to take breaks during the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\">I would like you to challenge this assumption. You may not need &#8220;nap pods,&#8221; but you can design periods of &#8220;white space&#8221; into your day. <strong>(Quick: spice up a few 15mins of white-space into your calendar for boredom, mind wandering, or sauntering!)<\/strong>. This is critical not only for your ability to learn, stay focused <\/span>with<span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\"> your <\/span>clients,<span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\"> but also, take care of your wellbeing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\">Today is World Mental Health Day. May we continue to subvert the notion of &#8220;mind over body,&#8221; but instead, appreciate that our mind is there to take care of our body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', Palatino;\">The next time you take a break, remind those around you that you are on the road of expertise, and on this road, routine pitstops are not a luxury but a necessity.
