In the field of helping others develop, we need not separate personal development<\/em> from professional development<\/em>. In fact, our professional development hinges on how much we grow as a person.<\/span><\/p>\n (Though somewhat of a tangent, the most professional thing we can do is to also to become personal in deep conversations, with the aim of helping someone out of the woods.)<\/span><\/p>\n Here is a paradox: The therapist’s own development is not for herself. Our vocation\u2014and its engine of development\u2014is about being in service of the other.
