About Daryl

To know others is wisdom, to know one’s self is enlightenment. - Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu

All I care about is to be of service. My work as a practitioner, researcher, and trainer is guided by this principle.

Specifically, be it for clients or professionals, I’m interested in helping people become better versions of themselves.

I’m currently based in Western Australia, banded together with a vibrant team of practitioners called Specialist Psychological Outreach Team (SPOT), at the Henry Street Centre. Located in the heart of Fremantle at the Henry St. Centre, I operate as a psychotherapist and clinical manager.  I return to my home country, Singapore to provide consultations and intensive therapy every few months. I continue to conduct research, trainings, clinical supervision, and write.

Before finding my home with SPOT, I worked as a senior psychologist with the Institute of Mental Health, Woodbridge Hospital and the Early Psychosis Intervention Program (EPIP), Singapore. I provided outpatient and inpatient psychological services, clinical supervision, psychotherapy research, clinical training and workshops.

In the research area, I spearheaded and collaborated in clinical researches involving psychotherapy outcomes, and the effects of training clinicians in Difficult Conversations in Therapy (DCT). (see Publications).

I am a co-editor and contributing author of a recent book, The Write to Recovery: Personal Stories & Lessons About Recovery From Mental Health Concerns. This book is a heart-felt collective of client’s journey of their struggles and recovery process, interweaved with mental health professionals who were part of the healing process. Click here for a preview of the introductory chapter, The Right to Recovery.

I am also a senior associate and certified trainer of the International Center for Clinical Excellence (ICCE), which is a world-wide consortium of clinicians, researchers, and educators dedicated to promoting excellence in behavioral health services.

As part of my Ph.D., I researched the area of development and practices of highly effective psychotherapists, alongside with my mentor and  collaborator, Scott D. Miller, Ph.D..Together, we are co-authoring a forthcoming book, Reach: Pushing Your Clinical Performance to the Next Level. (see PUBLICATION LIST for other works).

Earlier in my vocation, I worked in Mt. Elizabeth Hospital (Singapore), Redemptorist Youth Mission Team, Singapore Sports School, and taught at various institutions (e.g., Curtin University).

I care alot about being of service to others because I was reached out by key people who have helped me in my earlier years. Their counsel and guidance shaped me in so many ways. Barring the cliche, my work is my way of paying-it-forward.

I am drawn to the study of psychotherapy research, the development of expertise in various fields (sports, music, psychotherapy), ideas about learning, and spiritual practices in various cultures; I enjoy bridging the scared and secular.

My other “obsession” is in music, relating to performance, improvisation, recording, composition, and well, listening. I have learnt much from music about the ebb and flow of the emotional realm, and to translate that into the practice of therapy.

My wife and I spend part of our weekends serving as emergency relief volunteers with the St Vincent de Paul Society in Perth. We enjoy catching up on good movies, playing and wandering around parks and food places with our daughter, and spending time with family and friends.
